Fourth graders started printing today.  We used foam board to create relief prints. The focus is on line, shape and pattern.

Kindergarten Year of the Sheep drawings

We talked about the up coming Chinese New Year and the Chinese Zodiac.  Students learned about how the Chinese celebrate the Lunar New Year.  Thursday, February 19 we will be leaving the Year of the Horse and moving into the Year of the Sheep or Goat.  Students learned how to draw a sheep, goat and ram  and we talked about using line to create texture.  Children also learned the Chinese character for the word sheep, which some students included on their year of the sheep drawings.

4th Grade "fauxdermy"

NO ANIMALS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THESE WORKS OF ART.

4th Grade learned about taxidermy. We looked at the secret art of Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel Seuss. He created faux taxidermy of imaginary creatures. Students chose to create an endangered animal to build more awareness regarding the animal's plight.  Other students created an imaginary animal. Students used recycled materials to create the armature and then used paper mache to cover their sculpted "trophy" heads.  Children painted them and then cut out a cardboard backing to create their faux taxidermy trophy.

5th grade printmaking

5th grade started their linoleum printmaking project today.  We talked about various forms of printmaking: relief, intaglio, lithograph, silkscreen, woodcut & lino-cuts (which we will be doing).  Today students drew thumbnail sketches and began transferring them to their linoleum.  This image shows my example which is inspired by the upcoming Lunar New Year.

3rd Grade Dream Boxes

3rd grade is finishing their Dream Box project, which is inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and artist Joseph Cornell more about him here:  http://www.josephcornellbox.com/lifeart.htm 
Student chose a dream they have for themselves or the world to make the world a better place.  They added various materials to make their boxes have a 3D element.

2nd grade I have a dream Cloud mobiles

We recently finished making cloud mobiles inspired by Martin Luther King Day and his I Have a Dream speech.  Students drew a cloud and illustrated a  dream they have for themselves or the world.  They added shapes to hang from their larger cloud shape to create a mobile. They also integrated some writing about their dream into the piece.

1st Grade Arctic Animals

We learned about the bright dancing lights of the aurora borealis.  The lights are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. They are known as Aurora borealis in the north.  We looked at photos of this amazing phenomenon.  We  talked about arctic animals and about their adaptations and  habitat.  Students learned a wet-on-wet water color technique using salt which they applied to their background to create a "northern light sky".  Children also learned how to draw a various animals which they drew using a photo for reference. They cut out their drawn animal and glued it onto the foreground of their paintings
