2nd Grade goes to the Taj Majal

We took a virtual trip to India to visit the Taj Mahal. Students learned about the architecture and why it was built. They are studying India in their regular classroom so this project was a good tie in to their curriculum.  We talked about symmetry, using size to show distance,  and one point perspective (which is a fairly advanced concept for 2nd grade but I like to give them options and provide a challenge for students who want to attempt).    We used watercolor paints to finish them up. They are amazing.

5th grade Notans

5th grade studied the art of  Nōtan 濃淡  which is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery.  We talked about positive and negative space as well as symmetry to create a cut out Notan. Here are some of their works. They turned out amazing!

Kindergarten Symmetrical House Paintings

Kindergarten is studying Africa in the regular classroom.  During art we read the book My Painted House, My Friendly Chicken, and Me, by Maya Angelou.  It is  photographic book about a young girl from South Africa and the life and customs of the Ndebele people.

For this project student designed their house using a symmetrical design.  They used various  shapes and lines and color to complete their artwork.
